Practical Lessons From Deuteronomy (Part 2)
Our next practical lesson from Deuteronomy is this:

6. GOD WILL BE FOUND BY THOSE WHO SEEK HIM DILIGENTLY.
Deuteronomy 4:29 - "But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul."
What was true in Moses' day is still true today - "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you" (Matt. 7:7). God is not far from any of us, but we must seek Him diligently (cf. Acts 17:27).

7. PEOPLE OFTEN TURN TO GOD WHILE IN DISTRESS.
Deuteronomy 4:30 - "When you are in distress, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, when you turn to the LORD your God and obey His voice."
God is merciful to the truly penitent (cf. 4:31). It is good to turn back to God's ways when adversity hits, but it is better still to seek God's way and incline our hearts toward Him always.

8. WE MUST TEACH THE NEXT GENERATION ABOUT GOD & HIS WAYS.
Deuteronomy 6:7 - "You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in the house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up."
The Israelites were required to read the Law publicly every seven years (cf. 31:10-13); more often would have been better. It is impossible to obey what one does not know; thus, study is vitally important (cf. II Tim. 2:15)! Parents have a special responsibility to train their children in the ways of righteousness (cf. Prov. 22:6; Eph. 6:4).

9. VISUAL REMINDERS OF OUR FAITH ARE GOOD, IF THEY HAVE CONTINUED MEANING FOR US & ARE NOT USED FOR SHOW.
Deuteronomy 6:8,9 - "You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."
There is nothing inherently wrong with visual reminders (e.g., t-shirt slogans, artwork on the wall, even phylacteries, I suppose) but there is a danger that they may become idols in our hearts or used strictly for show. The Lord's Supper itself is a memorial (reminder) of our faith, and if we are not focused mentally and self-disciplined it can become an empty ritual. Reminders are beneficial, when used properly.

10. BE CAREFUL NOT TO FORGET GOD WHEN YOU ARE RICHLY BLESSED.
Deuteronomy 6:11,12 - "Houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, hewn-out wells which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant--when you have eaten and are full--then beware, lest you forget the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage."
This is a perennial problem of man: becoming rich, forgetting the real source of those blessings, and trusting in one's self and wealth instead of Almighty God. Being rich is not the problem, though it does make things more difficult (cf. Matt. 19:16ff). The problem is trusting in the creation instead of the Creator (cf. I Tim. 6:17-19).
